Another Rant from QB

Hey guys, March Madness is officially over and I had one request. Ah well, maybe next year. :)

In the meantime, I've had a situation come up and I need to speak about it and artist's rights.

I'm not going to name names, but it recently came to my attention that another user here on DA has fav'd one of my pieces and put in a folder called "Avs'. I looked at that particular collection, and it was a group of pieces, mostly photography, similar to my own and I came to the logical conclusion that she is using this artwork as avatars on other sites.

NOT COOL!

I am the owner of my artwork, and I retain all rights and privileges that entails. To use or alter my artwork in any way, shape or form without my express permission is illegal.

I will be posting notices on all my artwork (*groan* that's gonna take forever! My gallery is so huge right now...) that it is not to be used by anyone else for any reason without my express permission. If I find out who this user is, and believe me I'm trying, I have every right to file a lawsuit against her. Frankly, I'm angry enough to do it.

Yes, it's a compliment that she wants to use my artwork to represent herself. But that's stealing, plain and simple.

Okay, rant done!

I feel your frustration, and so do many other Da artists, it seems ignorance of copyright and blatant disregard of copyright laws is awash in the community, something really needs to be done to stop the situation, I've only had one piece of mine used without permission I spoke to the person and told them all it takes is a short not asking to use the piece and what it is for and I said most of the time I will say yes.

maybe avs is favs without the f?

I don't care if my images are copied... as most of them have TADMOD imprinted in them in some form or another... eg, my XM8 has private Tadmod printed on the dog-tag, and La Ternura has Tadmod in plain sight underneath the main character. ;P

what I'm trying to say is you should tag your pics so people can't use them without your permission. ;P

that's a good idea, I'll have to do that in the future. However, tags can be photoshopped or cropped out - you know? I think I'm going to embed watermarks from now on.

In general, I see no problem to use other's pics as avas and such, but it's a sign of good manners and fairness to 1. ask for permission befor use and 2. link back to the original or at least tell people where you got it if they ask.

I know the pain. Ive watermarked for years and since anyone that wanted to use my Angels for website building material and such have asked for permission first.

Sorry to hear this happened to you, it happens far too often. Something that might save you some time, is you could always put the notice in your signature?

the thing is that I hold the copyright on my artwork - and it is theft to use my art without my permission for anything.
